Rapidplay match v Emsworth, 2006

1. e4 e6 2. d4 c5?! The usual move 2... d5 is superior to this 3. Nf3 a6?! Another strange move 3... cxd4 would be better. I was already wondering what sort of plan my opponent had cooked up 4. Be3 cxd4 5. Nxd4 Nf6 6. Bd3 Nc6 7. O-O Qc7 8. a3 8. Nc3 was better as after 8... Nb4?! 9. a3 Nxd3 10. cxd3 White stands significantly better 8... e5 9. Ne2 Be7?? 9... d5 is necessary to free blacks game when 10. exd5 Nxd5 = 11. Bd210. Nbc3 d6 11. f4 11. Ng3 would be better 11... Be6 12. Nh5 Nxh5 13. Qxh5 starts an aggressive attack 11... exf4?! 11... O-O is probably now best 12. Qe1 Bg412. Nxf4 Ne5?! 12... Be6 is more solid 13. Nfd5 Bxd5 14. Nxd5 Nxd5 15. exd5 Ne5 16. Qh513. Nfd5 h6?? Obviously bad 13... Nxd5 is essential. What was Black thinking? The position is now hopeless and although I was slightly behind on the clock with about 12 minutes to my opponent's 20 I felt an immediate resignation would be appropriate 14. Nxc7+ Kf8 15. Nxa8 Neg4 16. Qf3 Ne5 17. Qe2 Nfg4 18. h3 Nf6 19. Nb6 Be6 20. Nbd5 Nh5?? Another blunder but 20... Bd8 does not improve anything. I was content just to swap off pieces with about 6 minutes on my clock to his 8 but won't reject free pieces 21. Qxh5 Bd8 22. Bd4 f6?? yet another tactical mistake but 22... g6 solves nothing. Why is Black still playing? Surely not for a win on time.23. Bxe5 dxe5 24. Qxe5 Kf7 25. Qd6 h5?! but what else 26. Nc7 Bc8 27. Bc4+ I was moving a little quickly now 27. Qd5+ is the quickest way to mate, although I really did not have time to find elegant sacrifices 27... Ke7 28. Bc4 Bxc7 29. Qf7+ Kd6 30. Rxf6+ gxf6 31. Rd1+ Kc6 32. Qxf6+ Be6 33. Qxe6+ Kc5 34. b4#27... Kg6 28. Qg3+ Kh6 29. Ne6 Bxe6 30. Bxe6 Bb6+ 31. Kh1 Bd4 31... Rf8 is best here but solves nothing 32. Bf5 g5 33. h4 Rg8 34. hxg5+?? Only because 34. Qc7 delivers mate quicker but I only had 2 minutes now, whilst my opponent had 3 minutes 34... Rxg5 35. Qf4 Again 35. Qc7 is quicker35... Be5 36. Qe3 h4 37. Rad1 h3 38. Qxh3+ it is nice to end with a Queen sacrifice rather than any less elegant mate.38... Rh5 39. Qxh5+ Kxh5 40. g4+ Kh4 41. Kg2 Kg5 42. Rh1 b5 43. Rdf1 I now had 1 minute and 14 seconds left to my opponent's 1 minute but now he did not move. He waited, his hand fell. I "forgot" to claim a win 43... Bh2 after 10 minutes thought 44. Rxh2 After a further 10 minutes thought Black resigned 1-0
