Rapidplay v Emsworth, 2007

1. Nf3 The match is 2-2 at "half-time" and the trophy will be Fareham's if we can repeat that; otherwise it will be a complicated game count 1... d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. d4 Be7 5. Bg5 Nbd7 6. e3 h6 7. Bh4 O-O 8. h3 c6 9. Qc2 dxc4 10. Bxc4 Nd5 11. Bg3 Re8 12. a3 Nxc3 13. bxc3 Nf6 14. e4 Qa5 White is now better and I have to be very careful not to let the Queen get trapped 15. O-O b6 16. Ne5 Bb7 17. f4 c5 18. Bd3 cxd4 19. cxd4 Rac8 20. Qe2 b5 21. f5 exf5 22. Rxf5 a6 23. Raf1 White starts going for the big attack 23... Qxa3 24. Nxf7 Kxf7 25. e5 Rc3 My first big mistake and the last chance to think - again both players are getting equally short of time; if I just defend - here by moving the King out of the immediate firing lineto g8 I ought to have won but my attempts to attack don't seem to work 26. Qh5+ Ke6 27. Rxf6+ Kd7 28. Bf5+ Kd8 29. Rd6+ This is a mistake I should have punished - Rb6 is winning 29... Bxd6 30. Qf7 Re7 The wrong way to defend - the other rook back to c7 and Black is winning; I thought it was a draw by repetition but White declined 31. Qf8+ Re8 32. Qxg7 Re7 33. Bh4 Qa2 My last two moves are hopeless but they had to be made instantly 34. exd6 Rce3 35. Qf8# OK so it is now 1-1 in missing mates but there was no good 34th move for Black 1-0
